- 10No, not generally. AHCIP covers medically necessary psychiatric or physician care. If a licensed psychiatrist or medical doctor utilizes clinical hypnosis, it may be billed through Alberta Health. AHS does not cover alternative/complementary therapies or private, standalone practitioners like hypnotists or RTT therapists. Extended health benefits (such as Alberta Blue Cross) generally do not cover hypnotherapy unless the practitioner also holds a Registered Psychologist designation. If your RTT or hypnotherapy session is provided by a licensed psychologist, it can sometimes be billed under your standard psychology benefit limits. Many Albertans successfully cover these alternative/complementary therapies if they have an employer-funded Health & Wellness Account or a personal health spending account. Check with your specific benefits administrator or provider to see if they classify hypnotherapy under "Complimentary Medicine" or if they only reimburse professionals holding a recognized provincial mental health designation.
